It is a common question with many answers. Animals have always been a passion that I could never turn off. That’s the number one ‘why’ I do what I do. Rescue is not that simple, however, It is, many times challenging, each day. It keeps me on my toes. That is what keeps me going, the passion and the constant challenge that makes me better a homeless dog’s life. If just one new foster family or one animal gets the needed recognition and ultimately adopted, it is so worth the time and effort.
I knew when I was 9 that rescue was for me. When I was 9, I saw a chipmunk being chased by a cat in my neighbors yard. The chipmunk got stuck between my neighbors house and an outdoor propane tank. I got between the cat and chipmunk and picked the chipmunk up. It looked at me and took a nice hold of my thumb…Moral of that story, I saved the chipmunk. To me that was it. If I can save a chipmunk, I can save the world, one animal at a time! Or at least that was my simple thought at the time.
When I was 24 I began my next chapter of the canine world. I started volunteering at my favorite animal shelter (which I still do). As the years went on, it really solidified for me, my path in rescue. I am happy to say that now I am actually saving dogs lives and there is no better feeling, besides me watching my children absorb the good that I do and teach them how to take care of and better a dog’s life.
And so begins Bleu’s K9 Rescue – Rescuing Animals / Educating People…
That mantra is our words to live by now. My rescue friends and I are proud of our efforts and encourage ‘the future of rescue’ in this way. We have taken these words to better our community. The required hours of community service that our schools require of these young people, gives them, and us, a unique opportunity to be out there in the public, to learn, and to serve. Animal rescue is a popular choice for community service, we welcome all young people to join in our efforts.
Another part of our rescue educates children on the importance of responsible pet ownership and the proper way to greet a dog. Our very own dog, Bleu, joins us at schools and scouts to help demonstrate that. Bleu also shows people that the ‘Pit bull’ stigma is not true.
Finally, My “ why” evolves, challenges, and most of all it enriches. What a gift to be given! When asked what I say to all those people out there who contemplate creating a new rescue? Know your why. It is THE foundation of which you will continue to build, to make it work for you, the community, and most of all, the animals you seek to save.
Until Next Time,
